GFA Athletics

"A sound mind in a sound body."

Ancient Greek Proverb

At GFA, excellence within our athletic programs is very important to us because of the role they play in our overarching goal to form young men and women of virtue and mature Christian character. Athletic programs do this in a handful of important ways.

First, within the classical tradition, philosophers have long understood the importance of not only the life of the mind but also the health of the body. The Christian apologist and author C.S. Lewis said it best when he wrote that man is an amphibian; we live in two worlds at once. We are both souls, and therefore inhabit the eternal world, and bodies, and therefore inhabit the physical world. What we do in one world by definition impacts our life in the other world. If we do not care for and discipline the body, then our mind will never achieve the heights it could otherwise.

Second, athletic competition and team sports serves as an excellent crucible in which character is shaped and formed. Augustine wrote that the role of temperance is “to quiet and restrain the passions which make us pant for things other than the laws of God and His goodness; that is, the happy life.” There are few things in life that inflame the passions – things like anger, disappointment, happiness, frustration, stress, etc. – quite like competition. Athletics provides a great opportunity for GFA coaches, parents, and teammates to model and practice the virtues of temperance and self-sacrifice.

And finally, athletics provide a great opportunity for GFA students to show the light of Christ to our neighbors. When our athletes, coaches, and administrators engage other competitors and model a Christ-centered life to them, it is our sincere hope that God will use that to draw all people to Him.
